At 63, McGuigan—widely recognized for his iconic 1985 world featherweight title win against Eusebio Pedroza—will enter the jungle alongside a cast that includes N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos, Coleen Rooney, and McFly’s Danny Jones. The show premieres on ITV1 this Sunday at 9 p.m.

Reflecting on his motivation for joining, McGuigan said: “The physical part can be tough, but it’s the mental challenge I really want to conquer before I get any older. I’m 63 now, and while I like to think I’m a young 63, it doesn’t mean the challenges will be easy. I’d rather tackle this at 63 than 73, if I’m honest. I’m not expecting to win, but I’d love to last long enough to really get to know everyone in camp.”

The former boxing champ, who later became a respected trainer and pundit, also expressed his readiness to face any jungle trials that come his way.

“I can’t say no to any of it,” McGuigan explained. “Once you decide to join I’m A Celebrity, you’ve got to be willing to try everything. Some tasks might be gross, and exhaustion is part of it, but as a fighter, you learn to go through hell—both physically and mentally. I know what

I’m in for, even if it might be funny at times when I’m saying, ‘oh no, you go ahead.’ But I won’t back down.”

McGuigan, who was born in Clones, was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1985 and is celebrated for uniting Catholic and Protestant fans during the height of the Troubles.
