Custom House Quay will be transformed into a hub of activity with cycling workshops, games, live entertainment, and an outdoor cinema, as it closes to motorised traffic.
Dublin City Council is bringing fun to the heart of the city by turning Custom House Quay into a car-free zone for the day.
Activities will include drum workshops, chess challenges, BMX stunt shows, dancing, guided tours of the Custom House visitor centre, and walking tours of the Quay.
This event offers a unique opportunity for the community to experience Dublin’s urban space in a new, engaging way.
Car Free Day marks the conclusion of European Mobility Week, an annual initiative by the European Commission promoting sustainable urban mobility.
Each year, the event focuses on a different theme. This year’s theme highlights creating designated spaces for citizens to gather and enjoy their surroundings in a more sustainable, community-focused way.
With 70% of Europeans living in cities, Car Free Day aims to spark conversations about the importance of developing these urban spaces.
Deputy Lord Mayor Donna Cooney expressed her excitement about the event, stating: “I’m thrilled to see Car Free Day return to Dublin. As a European capital, Dublin is committed to being Climate Neutral by 2030, and events like this showcase the importance of accessible, sustainable transport options.
“I encourage all Dubliners to join us at Custom House Quay for Car Free Day, which also marks the final day of European Mobility Week. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or using public transport, it’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy a family-friendly day in the city.”
Car Free Day is organised by Dublin City Council in partnership with European Mobility Week.
