The approval includes a 120-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System and a 220kV grid connection cable.
The decision follows a High Court ruling last September, which overturned An Bord Pleanála’s initial refusal. The planning board had previously rejected the project, citing government policy and an ongoing energy supply review. However, the High Court found the refusal was based on interpretations rather than a formal directive.
Minister for Children, Disability, Equality, and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomed the decision, highlighting the employment potential for North Kerry. Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae and local councillor Michael Foley also supported the development, calling it a significant economic boost.
Environmental groups strongly oppose the decision. Labour’s climate spokesperson Ciarán Ahern argued it undermines Ireland’s climate goals by facilitating the importation of fracked gas. Friends of the Irish Environment accused An Bord Pleanála of ignoring legal obligations to work toward a climate-neutral economy. Safety Before LNG described the approval as inappropriate while the LNG terminal application remains before the High Court.
Despite ongoing opposition, supporters believe the project could act as a catalyst for further investment in the Tarbert landbank, with a final resolution dependent on potential legal appeals.
