Repair efforts have now entered their sixth day, with 133,000 premises in the Republic of Ireland and 23,500 in Northern Ireland still awaiting electricity restoration.
In response, Ireland’s National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) convened on Wednesday to coordinate efforts to restore power, water, and telecommunications following the storm’s impact last Friday. To aid in recovery, Ireland has requested large-capacity generators through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. These generators, sourced from Poland and Denmark, will be deployed to assist Uisce Éireann and telecommunications providers in restoring essential services to homes and businesses.
Minister for Housing, Local Government, and Heritage James Browne emphasized the scale of the response, stating: “This historic storm has required an unprecedented response, and the Government is doing everything possible to support those affected and restore services as quickly as possible.”
Keith Leonard, Chair of the NECG, highlighted ongoing relief efforts:
“With over 250 Emergency Response Hubs now in operation across the country and more coming online, the NECG continues to support local authorities in their vital work. Local Coordination Groups are also active in 19 counties, ensuring resources reach those in greatest need, particularly the most vulnerable.”
Meanwhile, NIE Networks has restored power to 261,500 properties in Northern Ireland. A company spokesperson reaffirmed their commitment to full restoration: “Our priority remains restoring power to all affected customers. We have over 1,400 staff deployed, with additional electrical and industrial personnel from other agencies and jurisdictions assisting in the effort.”
The spokesperson also cautioned that some customers may experience temporary power interruptions in the coming days as permanent repairs are made. Additionally, NIE Networks warned the public about scam messages falsely claiming to be from the company, advising: “Our staff will never request financial details or ask customers to click on links.
We urge customers to block and report any suspicious messages.”
Northern Ireland Water confirmed that all customers previously affected by water supply disruptions should now have service restored.
Stephanie McCullagh, Director of Customer and Operations, expressed gratitude for the collaborative recovery efforts: “We appreciate the support of local councils, agencies, and elected representatives in distributing bottled water, providing access to our sites, and identifying vulnerable customers. The dedication of NI Water staff, working under extreme conditions, has been remarkable. Their commitment underscores just how vital water and water workers are to daily life.”
