The Spaniard in Cathedral Quarter, Muriel's in Church Lane, and Stranmillis Road's Jeggy Nettle received fresh licenses from Belfast City Council's licensing committee.

Janine Kane of JK Pubs Limited is the owner of all three pubs.

The Spaniard and Muriel's are now licensed to operate from 11.30 am to 1 am Monday through Saturday and from 12.30 pm to 1 am on Sundays.

The Jeggy Nettle's current license runs from 11.30 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Monday through Saturday and from 12.30 p.m. to midnight on Sunday.

Every day of the week, all three bars will now be allowed to stay open until two in the morning; however, this is only supposed to happen on Fridays and Saturdays.

DJs and live bands now offer entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights at Muriel's and The Spaniard, and on Monday through Sunday nights at the Jeggy Nettle.

According to the council licensing report on the application, "the licensee feels that the three premises are an integral part of Belfast's nightlife and that an increase in operating hours will allow them to compete within the sector, which is essential for the commercial success of the businesses." The licensee has requested a variation of the permitted hours until 2am.

The proposals were not met with any opposition from Belfast City Council.

According to Ms. Kane, the licence may only be used on Fridays and Saturdays.
