Park School in Belfast took home the Best Film (Ages 12-15) award for Superhero School, a short film created by pupils with support from staff and Into Film mentors. Shot on location at the school on Ravenhill Road, the story imagines a school where every student has a unique superpower, and follows a playful rivalry between two teachers, Speedy and Quicklight. Eleven pupils acted in the film, alongside teacher Jon McKinkey in the role of “Super Tea.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mr McKinley described the award win as “pretty unbelievable,” adding “We started this project just before Christmas with a simple idea, and now the kids are on a red carpet in London.” The team was thrilled to meet stars like Sharon Horgan and even James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli.
Principal Bernie Davis expressed her pride, saying, “The children are in shock – they’ve not only won an award but met stars and were even invited to Paramount Studios.”
Also celebrating success were pupils from St. Colcille’s High School in Crossgar, named one of just three Filmmaking Champions across the UK. The school, which integrates film into its curriculum, was recognised for its commitment to creative learning. In 2024, their film Cereal Killers won the Audience Choice Awards.
Teacher Victoria Polly highlighted the significance of the achievement, noting that students have overcome significant challenges, including mental health struggles and reduced funding. “It’s inspiring to see our young people thrive through creative expression,” she said.
The ceremony featured appearances by Hugh Grant, Andy Serkis, and Rose Ayling-Ellis, celebrating the power of film in education.
