Users of X, formerly known as Twitter, were outraged to learn that their posts could now be used to train the company’s Grok AI chatbot.

Grok, available to X Premium customers, is marketed as a humorous, enhanced search feature powered by a “state-of-the-art large language model” initially trained on publicly available sources.

The company intends to use user interactions and posts to improve the service.

X users are automatically opted into this new system but can opt out in the web-based app’s settings.

When enabled, this setting allows posts and interactions with the chatbot to be used for “training,” and this data may also be shared with X’s partner company, xAI.

With its European headquarters in Dublin, X is regulated by the DPC in Europe.

In a statement, a DPC spokesman said: “The DPC has been engaging with X on this matter for a number of months, with our latest interaction occurring as recently as yesterday. Therefore, we are surprised by today’s developments.

“We have followed up with X today and are awaiting a response.

“We expect further engagement early next week.”
