The council-employed lifeguards have raised the red flag at Fanore Beach for the fourth day this week. Due to the presence of the Lion's Mane jellyfish, the red flag was flying at the beach on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week.

One of the biggest jellyfish species is the lion's mane variety, measuring three meters in length. The stinging cells in its tentacles are used to catch fish and other prey. This type of jellyfish when stung can cause nausea, cramps, and sweating. Which gave the lifeguards no choice but to put the red flags up.

The local spokesperson spoke on the matter and stated: “The very first priority for lifeguards is people’s safety, and it is good to see the lifeguards being vigilant and having the knowledge there to protect the general public.”

Hopefully, the sightings drop, and the public can enjoy the rare Irish sunshine.
