This multi-agency initiative, thought to be the first of its kind in Ireland, brings together the Health Service Executive, An Garda Síochána, Donegal Domestic Violence Service, and the North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force.

Titled ‘Empowering Salon Professionals to Recognise and Respond to Domestic Violence, Coercive Control, and Addiction’, the programme is aimed at hairdressers, barbers, nail technicians, aestheticians and salon owners across the northwest.

Participants will receive training and practical advice on identifying indicators of domestic violence, coercive control, and substance misuse, and on how to respond in a safe and supportive manner.

Organisers hope the training will raise awareness and equip salon professionals with the knowledge needed to help create safer, more supportive community spaces for those facing abuse or addiction.

A survivor will speak during the training session, sharing firsthand experience to deepen understanding.

Attendees will also learn how to offer discreet support, refer clients to appropriate services, and handle sensitive disclosures while maintaining professional boundaries.

Last year, Gardaí received over 65,000 domestic abuse-related contacts – an average of 1,250 per week.
