Conor Murphy, the minister of economy, proposed banning onshore oil and gas production and exploration in the area, and the Executive approved the plan.

Fracking, also referred to as hydraulic fracturing, is a contentious technique that involves pumping liquid at high pressure deep below to fracture shale rock and release trapped gas or oil.

According to Mr. Murphy, the action brought Northern Ireland one step closer to reducing its dependency on fossil fuels.

"I welcome the Executive's collective commitment to tackling our ongoing dependence on fossil fuels," he stated.

Decarbonisation is at the heart of my economic proposals since achieving our net zero goal by 2050 is both morally and legally required.

"During the public consultation earlier this year, I heard the opinions of the people in the north, and they overwhelmingly agreed with my plan to outlaw onshore petroleum exploration and extraction.

"In the meantime, my department will not accept or process onshore petroleum licensing applications." Northern Ireland does not presently have any active licenses in use.
