On February 25, 2025, the PSO contract, which offers twice-daily two-way air services that enable same-day return travels between Donegal and Dublin, was scheduled to end.

James Lawless, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, acknowledged that some people, such as Donegal Cancer Flights & Services, have expressed worries about how the Dublin Airport passenger cap would affect the PSO air service.

Assuring individuals and companies "that there will be no impact to passengers using this service under this important contract" was the Minister's stated goal.

"I am acutely aware of the importance this PSO service has to the region, including for passengers travelling for medical reasons," he stated.

Following an EU public procurement process run by the Department of Transport Transport in compliance with EU Regulation 1008/2008, Emerald Airlines was granted the PSO contract three years ago.

This particular legislation makes it possible to offer PSO air services to remote locations that are underserved by other modes of transportation to corporate, administrative, educational, and medical hubs.
