Taylor redeemed her first professional defeat by beating Cameron at the 3Arena last November, reclaiming her status as the undisputed super-lightweight champion.
After adding another title to her collection before a home crowd, many wondered what else Taylor had left to achieve in boxing.
But speaking to BreakingNews.ie ahead of her anticipated rematch with Amanda Serrano, Taylor emphasized that retirement was never a consideration.
“It was never on my radar to retire after that fight. I need to have at least one more fight with Chantelle before I consider retirement,” Taylor stated.
“I still have so much to give to the sport, and I’m grateful I didn’t hang up my gloves. Now, I’m preparing for another huge bout, probably the biggest of my career.”
Taylor and Serrano first clashed in April 2022, when Taylor won by split decision at Madison Square Garden, successfully defending her lightweight titles.
Serrano, previously the undisputed featherweight champion, is once again moving up in weight to 138 pounds. Despite her experience at higher weights, Taylor doesn’t think this will significantly impact the fight.
“I think we’re basically the same size,” she said. “This fight is at 138, a catchweight, but if you look at us, we’re pretty evenly matched. I could make 126 pounds if I needed to. Serrano has looked drained at that weight recently, so I’m not sure if there’s an advantage, but I definitely feel strong at this weight.”
After years of anticipation, fans finally saw Taylor fight twice in the 3Arena in 2023. Despite her first professional loss in May, she quickly geared up for a rematch with Cameron, whom she bested just over a year later.
While the experience of losing was unfamiliar, Taylor didn’t dwell on it. “Losses are tough, but I think I’m mentally strong, so I didn’t feel sorry for myself for long,” she said.
“I took Sunday off after the fight and was back in the gym by Monday. Defeats make you analyze and learn a lot about yourself and what you need to improve. Those moments make you stronger. I think I’m a better fighter because of that experience.”
Katie Taylor’s rematch with Amanda Serrano will co-headline the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson event on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
