The tub of curry sauce, originally priced at just over €2, drew bids from 17 people on eBay. Half of the proceeds were donated to the Cork Penny Dinners soup kitchen, and Norbert emerged as the winning bidder.
Speaking on Cork’s Red FM, Norbert shared that he was on holiday when large crowds gathered outside the beloved Bandon Road chipper before its closure. Some customers waited up to three hours for their final meal from the iconic establishment.
When Norbert spotted the curry sauce for sale on eBay, he couldn’t resist bidding. “I got the curry last night. I went to my local chipper for chips and chicken, and my partner and I just stared at the curry for about 10 minutes before eating it. It was divine,” he said. “We had to defrost it since we missed Lennox’s closing while we were away. I was kicking myself for not getting food before they shut, so when I saw the tub online, I had to have it.”
Norbert admitted he was willing to bid up to €100, especially knowing part of the sale was for charity. Although initially tempted to save the curry for a special occasion, he couldn’t wait. “I don’t regret eating it. I enjoyed every bite.”
Originally from Poland, Norbert explained how his accent has changed after living in Ireland for over 20 years. “When I moved to Cork about five or six years ago, I picked up the city twang. I came here with my parents as a young fella, and I don’t regret a thing.”
Norbert is now considering bidding on another tub of Lennox’s curry sauce listed on eBay but said he wouldn’t pay more than €50. “The curry is delicious, and with half the profits going to Penny Dinners, you don’t mind paying extra sometimes. This is the last bit of Lennox’s.”
He also believes that KC’s in Douglas will now become Cork’s most beloved chipper and praised Irish takeaways in general. “KC’s is gorgeous. We have chippers in Poland, but they aren’t as good as the ones here. Irish chippers have a bigger selection and the curry is much better.”
