Local supermarkets and businesses contribute fresh food, helping to keep the fridge stocked with perishable items that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Angela O’Brien, who manages the Owenkillew centre where the Gortin community fridge is located, said it has prevented 10 tonnes of edible food—equivalent to 24,000 meals—from being discarded since its launch in 2023.

She expressed her dismay, calling it “horrendous” to see so much food wasted when it could benefit families in need.

The Community Fridge Network is coordinated by Hubbub, a UK charity focused on promoting sustainability and environmental protection.

The first community fridge in Northern Ireland opened in Cloughmills, County Antrim, in 2017. Since then, the initiative has gained popularity, with 15 fridges now operating in shared spaces such as schools and community centres, managed by community groups and volunteers. These fridges are accessible to everyone.

What is a community fridge?

· Unlike food banks, which often require a referral and serve

people in financial need, community fridges are open to all, regardless of income.

· Other initiatives, like social supermarkets, also operate

across Northern Ireland’s 11 council areas.
