The first Enterprise train departed the station at 8:05 am, heading to Dublin Connolly Station.

Additionally, the rail line between Belfast and Lisburn, which had been temporarily closed, has now reopened. A regular hourly Enterprise service between Belfast and Dublin is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, October 29.

The £340 million Belfast Grand Central Station, which opened in September, initially operated only bus services while preparations were made to launch rail services. It is set to become the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland, replacing the Europa Bus Centre and the old Great Victoria Street Station.

Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd welcomed the new services, stating: “This marks a significant step in enhancing our public transport network. I am thrilled to see rail services begin from Grand Central Station.

“The reopening of the rail line between Lisburn and Belfast is great news for the many commuters and cross-border travellers who rely on this route. Belfast Grand Central Station is now the largest transport facility in Ireland, capable of handling 20 million passenger journeys annually.

“With eight rail platforms and 26 bus stands, this facility demonstrates the transformative impact of infrastructure. A lot of hard work has gone into reaching this milestone, and I want to thank everyone involved.

Most importantly, I want to thank the public for their patience while we completed the necessary rail safety processes to make this day possible.”

Chris Conway, Translink Group chief executive, said: “The start of rail services at Belfast Grand Central is a key moment in Northern Ireland’s public transport evolution, offering integrated connections that bring people and places closer together.

“The first Enterprise departure this morning was a historic moment, marking not only the station’s first rail service but also the return of cross-border trains to the heart of Belfast. We encourage passengers to allow extra time as they get used to the new station and its updated features, including new ticket gates. I extend my thanks to all those involved in making this possible, as well as to our passengers and stakeholders for their patience throughout the project.”

Tom Newman, chief executive of Babcock’s Land business, added: “We’re proud to have played a key role in supporting Translink with the development of Belfast Grand Central Station, ensuring that both residents and visitors can benefit from this world-class transport hub.”
