During the ceremony, the US Special Envoy to Northern Ireland for Economic Affairs joked, “The only other Kennedy in my family to have a library named after them had to run for President. I think I took the easy route!”
The Joe Kennedy III and Lauren Kennedy Poetry Library will serve as a space for emerging poets to develop their craft, drawing inspiration from Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and the creative community at the Centre.
“It is an extraordinary honour for both my wife and me,” Kennedy remarked. “It’s certainly something I never expected. I may not be able to inspire a poet, but I’ve certainly been inspired by them.”
Queen’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Ian Greer, explained that the library’s name recognizes Kennedy’s contributions to the university and Northern Ireland. “He has highlighted the critical role universities play in society and the economy, while also encouraging investments that benefit our students now and into the future.”

At the event, Kennedy noted, “The Seamus Heaney Centre is an investment in the future of creativity, the arts, and the aspirations of Queen’s students. The university goes beyond offering education—it finds ways to open doors and set students on a path to success. I’ve heard inspiring stories from students who, despite challenges like affordability or background, wouldn’t have access to higher education without this kind of support.”
The library’s naming follows a philanthropic donation from the Curran Family Foundation to support the Centre and honour Kennedy’s impact on Queen’s and Belfast.
Dr. Garrett Curran, Chair of Queen’s Foundation Board, shared, “The Seamus Heaney Centre has benefited from nearly £2 million in donations and grants. This support is essential for creating iconic spaces like this and for fostering the outreach and academic work that make the Centre a vibrant hub. Joe Kennedy III’s focus on investment in Northern Ireland and support for Queen’s students emphasizes the value of education as an investment in our collective future. We’re honoured to name this library after him.”
