In England, 12.6% in Wales, 13.3% in Northern Ireland, and 13.5% in Scotland, the current smoking rate is 11.6%. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the numbers.
According to a breakdown by local authority, Belfast ranks among the top 15 places in the UK with 18.4% of residents smoking.
Additionally, there are high rates in Derry City and Strabane (14.9%), as well as Causeway Coast and Glens (16.5%). In the UK, the age range of 25 to 34 has the largest percentage of current smokers (14%).
Smoking rates among those between the ages of 18 and 24 decreased the most, from 15.9% in 2011 to 9.8% in 2023.
