Mali, a Bernese Mountain Dog, ran off from her owners on Arranmore Island on August 16th after being frightened by strong winds.

Despite an extensive search effort by her German owners and the local community, there was no trace of the beloved pet.

However, on Saturday night, a fishing boat in the area spotted the dog perched precariously on a 200-foot cliff.

A rescue operation was quickly organized, and Mali was safely retrieved and reunited with her owner, Sara Recinos Ralda, and her family on the mainland in Burtonport just hours later.

It was discovered that Mali’s leash had become tangled on the cliff, preventing her from returning to her desperate owners who were searching for her.

The two sisters who helped locate Mali on the cliff have now been reunited with their newfound friend.

Sisters Aoibheann and Róisín Ní Leathlobhair, students at Scoil an Aingil Choimhéadaí, a small Gaeltacht school in Keadue, Burtonport, played a key role in the rescue. Róisín first thought she heard barkingwhile aboard the North West Charter fishing boat with her father, Padraig Lawlor, on Saturday evening.

Michael Boyle, another person on the boat, also heard the barking. When they turned off the boat’s engines, they soon spotted Mali.

As a gesture of gratitude, Mali’s owner, Sara, brought the resilient dog to the girls’ school earlier on Monday.

Anne Marie Uí Icí, the school principal, said there was great excitement when Mali arrived.

“It was such a beautiful moment, and all the children were thrilled to see Mali. It’s a wonderful story with a happy ending, and we could all use that right now,” she said.

Mali happily posed for photos with her new friends.

Despite losing some weight and being a bit disoriented after her ordeal, Mali is in good spirits and ready for her next adventure.
