In an internal memo to RTÉ staff on Thursday, Director General Kevin Bakhurst stated that an agreement regarding Mr. Jennings’ departure had been reached “with the support of the Workplace Relations Commission.”

However, the specifics of the agreement were not disclosed.

Mr. Jennings, who was a member of RTÉ’s executive board until last year when the payments scandal involving Ryan Tubridy came to light, had served under former RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes.

Since last summer, Mr. Jennings had been on leave for health reasons and did not participate in the Oireachtas committee hearings related to the pay scandal.

Mr. Jennings began his career at RTÉ in 1985 as a researcher and later worked as a television producer/director before being appointed head of RTÉ Radio 1. He became director of content in 2017.

In his note to staff, Mr. Bakhurst said: “I would like to inform you that Jim Jennings will be leaving RTÉ on August 31st.

“I want to express my gratitude to Jim for his nearly 40 years of dedicated service to RTÉ and his significant contributions to the organization and public service media.

“Jim’s departure comes as RTÉ is redefining its audio and visual strategies as part of the organization’s new direction.

“I am glad that we were able to come to an agreement on the terms of his departure with the assistance of the Workplace Relations Commission.

“I wish Jim all the best for the future.”
