Mr. Varadkar was present at the United Center to listen to speeches from prominent figures, including Ms. Pelosi, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz.

During his tenure as Taoiseach, Mr. Varadkar met with Ms. Pelosi several times. In 2019, he hosted her during her visit to Ireland, where she addressed Dáil Éireann.

Though Mr. Varadkar is typically involved in major international events in an official capacity, it seems he is in Chicago merely as an observer this time. He shared the photo on his Instagram story. Ms. Pelosi is said to have played a significant behind-the-scenes role in the events leading to U.S. President Joe Biden stepping aside to allow his vice president to challenge Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.

Despite the show of unity at the DNC, Ms. Pelosi has acknowledged that she has not spoken with Mr. Biden since his decision to withdraw from the race.

Leo Varadkar, the Dublin West TD, has confirmed that he will retire from politics at the next general election. The 45-year-old has not yet disclosed his future plans but has confirmed receiving several offers.

It is believed that Mr. Varadkar is currently working on his memoirs.
