The forthcoming feature film on the violent row that almost derailed Ireland's 2002 World Cup campaign has finished casting.
Additionally, Coogan, a two-time Oscar nominee best known for his roles in The Reckoning, Philomena, and Alan Partridge, is slated to play Barnsley man McCarthy in the movie.
In his largest casting to date, Cork actor Hardwicke, 27, who is best known for his real crime series The Sixth Commandment on BBC One, will play Keane.
The script was written by Paul Fraser, and the film will be directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D'Sa, the team behind the critically acclaimed Irish musical comedy-drama Good Vibrations.
The production is scheduled to begin this summer. Manager McCarthy sent squad captain Keane home after the two had an ugly altercation on the Pacific island before the competition in Japan and South Korea.
The event made headlines across the world and sowed discord among Irish football fans. Dublin Live looked at what may have occurred if the altercation had never gotten out of hand on the 20th anniversary.
