Large numbers of citizens appealed against Dublin City Council's decision to allow the German discount supermarket chain's planning proposal for a mixed-use development on the site of the old Bright Ford Rialto on Herberton Road, Dublin 12, but their appeal was denied by An Bord Pleanála.

The plan calls for the construction of a six-story structure with 41 flats situated on the upper stories.

Over an underground parking lot and three ground-floor retail spaces, the supermarket—which will also have an off-licence and bakery—will be situated at first-floor level.

Additionally, there will be a manicured courtyard on the second story.

The 0.45-hectare plot next to the Grand Canal is also intended to be used for the destruction of existing structures, such as a salesroom and commercial warehouse.

Originally, Lidl had applied for approval to develop a six-story structure with a supermarket and 60 flats. However, the business changed its plans in response to concerns expressed by council planners, eliminating one story from the front and back of the property.
