Speaking at the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace on Thursday, Mr. Harris discussed the potential funding sources for RTÉ. He indicated that a mix of licence fee payments and direct government funding might be the solution.

Mr. Harris expressed hope that the Government could soon resolve the funding issue for the national broadcaster.

“I believe there are two ways to fund public service broadcasting: a reformed licence fee model or direct exchequer funding,” he said. “However, there might be a middle ground.”

He emphasized several principles he considers important. “I don’t want taxpayers to pay more in licence fees than they currently do. We need clarity on what we are funding in terms of public service broadcasting. It’s crucial to support RTÉ’s excellent work, while also recognizing the role of other outlets, such as local radio and media,” he stated.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of a sustainable funding model. “I want a durable and long-lasting solution for public service broadcasting funding. It’s not enough to have a short-term fix,” he concluded.
