In a nail-biting championship game on Sunday at Croke Park, New York defeated Kilkenny by a single point to win the All-Ireland junior football title for the first time ever.
With only a few minutes left, Rory Monks scored a point to give the defending champions Kilkenny a one-point lead, it appeared as though they would win the title back-to-back. However, New York immediately tied the game with a Shay McElligot goal before Coughlin scored the game-winning point.
Points from McElligot (2), Conor Mathers (3), Thomas Shalvey, and CJ Molloy, New York, which is made up entirely of local New Yorkers, took a strong four-point lead into halftime.
When McElligot scored immediately after the restart, they swiftly increased their lead to five points. Kilkenny, however, vigorously countered with goals from Mick Kenny and James Carroll to keep the score at one goal each.
In the 42nd minute Kilkenny scored a much-needed goal.
After scoring three of the next four points to extend their advantage to two points with little over five minutes left in the game, Kilkenny appeared to be pulling away from New York, but the team showed incredible resiliency to come back and win their first-ever junior championship.
At full-time, Alicia Keys' “Empire State of Mind” and Frank Sinatra's “New York, New York” blared as New York celebrated their first-ever All Ireland victory in Croke Park.
