The Irish naval ship is about to go on a six-week deployment in southern Europe to assist the EU in enforcing the United Nations arms embargo that’s been placed on Libya.
The operation is named Irini which started in 2020. The fifty-three crewman’s main objective is to gather intel and monitor the seas for any arms trafficking off the coast of Libya, and also to block oil exports.
This is due to the ongoing civil war in Libya and the United Nations’ way of potentially forcing peace talks between the two factions and ending the violence in the African nation.
The Naval Ship will leave for the Mediterranean on Thursday from Haulbowline in Cork.
