The Dublin City Council has decided to do this in remembrance of the fourteen people who got killed in Croke Park by the Black and Tans back in 1920.
The proposal was first put forward three years ago. Labour councillors Joe Costello and Dermot Lacey had objections, they put forward to call the bridge ‘Remembrance Bridge or 14’. The new name was also put to a public vote via an online survey which resulted in 52.9% being against the name.
The commission referred the motion back to the Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) to put before the City Council for approval.
Finally, after much consultation, the Dublin City Council approved the bridge to be renamed at last night’s meeting.
