Described in NCH documents as a “work of art”, the project aims to establish long-term partnership with the selected organ builder, replacing the 1991 Jone Organ as part of the building’s major redevelopment.
This instrument’s design, construction, transport, and installation are highly specialised, with a minimum build time of three years. The estimated cost, benchmarked against international comparisons, also includes a 10-year maintenance plan.
Dr. William McVicker, a world-leading organ consultant, has advised that the organ must enhance both solo and orchestral performances, adding depth and drama to musical compositions.
The redevelopment of the NCH, portrayed by the Office of Public Works as a “once in a multigenerational opportunity”, aims to double its economic contribution to Irish music. The allocated space for the new organ will be significantly larger than the current one, which ahs a book value of €735, 460.
The tender closes on May 30, with a contract expected to be singed in September, while the existing organ will be removed in October 2026, and installation of the new instrument will take place between November 2029 and April 2030.
