Omniplex announced that it will put in over €3 million into the development of the theatre, which should result in the creation of up to 20 full- and part-time jobs.
Since the closing of The Landscape Cinema on Landscape Road in 1955, or about 70 years ago, Rathfarnham has not had a neighbourhood theatre.
The Omniplex Group, with 355 screens spread across 44 locations in the UK and Ireland, is the fourth-biggest chain of movie theatres in both countries.
The Anderson family owns and runs Omniplex, which is entirely Irish. According to Mark Anderson, Director of Omniplex Cinema Group, the company's Nutgrove theatre will feature five 50-seat auditoriums showing the newest blockbuster films.
According to Steven Stocks, centre manager of Nutgrove Shopping Centre, the new movie theatre will be a much-needed and exciting addition to the local community's entertainment offerings.
"As we commemorate our 40th anniversary, Nutgrove Shopping Centre is still seeing high demand for space to accommodate our patrons' needs. We are happy that the movie theatre will create new job prospects in the community," he continued.
