Environmentalists protested for three years, but more than 25 years ago, part of the forest near Delgany was cleared.
The nature reserve made top news between 1997 and 2000 when self termed "eco warriors" set up camp there, with some living in tree-houses in objection to plans to extend the N11 between Kilmacanogue and Kilpedder.
The plan was only marginally modified, and the campaign—which finally ended up in the courts—was ultimately ineffective.
There have been requests for the State to purchase a nearly 200-acre property that borders the Glen of the Downs.
The property was listed for sale lately and is being offered for €6.5 million. Several parties are interested in purchasing the 197 acres of agricultural land and woodland on Kindlestown Road near Delgany, according to the agency selling the property.
The location was previously approved for a golf course.
However, local politicians and environmentalists argue that the State would have a rare chance to expand one of Ireland's old woodlands if the site were purchased.
