Since 2020, only one in every 29 cars sold in County Roscommon has been electric. In contrast, electric vehicles account for one in six and one in seven new car registrations in Dublin, Kildare, and Meath, respectively.
Professor Brian Caulfield from Trinity College Dublin, an expert in transportation, suggests that the cost might contribute to the disparity between rural and urban areas:
“Our research indicates that wealthier regions, often in urban areas around Dublin, Cork, and other cities, have a significantly higher uptake of electric cars. These vehicles are often purchased as a second car, so cost could be a contributing factor.”
